Productivity is for losers

I knew this was going to be a good weekend when I discovered late Friday night that I'd been wearing my underwear inside out all day.

I think that statement really deserved its own paragraph. So, there we go. And here's a quick rundown of life as of late.

Friday, I was super not productive, but got to go see Brave, the new pixar movie with some friends. It was nothing like the trailer leads you to believe. If you see it and also find yourself thinking, "What the eff," know that you aren't the only one my friend. Most everyone I went with felt the same way. And there were 14 of us. Power in numbers. Here's a few of the lovely ladies I went with:

Afterwards we had a lovely dinner and then headed to our respective homes to continue our streak of not studying.

Saturday I did some running and was on the elliptical. It just so happened that my favorite yoga instructor was one elliptical over so afterwards, I chatted with him. He saw me huffing and puffing and told me that it never gets easier and you just have to keep going. I'm not sure if he said that because I seemed as though I was going to give up because of all the huffing and puffing, but I was kind of glad he did. Mostly because he's super in shape and it's nice to know that exercising is hard for him, too.

I also got yelled at for the first time ever for not wearing my shoes while on the treadmill. So, of course I did it again today and didn't get yelled at. Yup, I'm a bamf.

Today I did some more cardio again - just running and the elliptical, but man my hips hurt. I'm not sure why, but it's painful to sit in a chair for an extended period of time. So, I'm writing this lovely blog on my bed. Here's a creepy pic to prove it:
Having a flash that close to your face is not flattering
Anywho, tomorrow I have a final exam. I also have one on Friday that is going to require a ridiculous amount of studying, which makes me wish I'd been much more productive this weekend. Oh well. At least I had some fun!

Hurt the Dirt

I am beyond thankful that I have air conditioning in my apartment. I don't care if my electricity bill skyrockets. Sleeping in 92°F weather is not for me. So, thank the science gods for planting the brilliant idea of cooling air into someone's head. I bow down to you.

I am not thanking any gods for the invention of trail running. That shit is hard. I ran my very first trail 5k this weekend. It was no joke. There were hills and tree roots and huge rocks - it was ridiculous. And so, so hard. And of course, as we began running and the legit runners passed me, I started thinking to myself, "Why did I do this? This was the worst idea ever. You're not in shape. You shouldn't be running in races. Gah. This is so hard. Just. Want. To. Stop. How can I get myself out of this? Is there a way back where no one will notice if I suck?" Yeah, so I was thinking happy thoughts. But once I got to about 1.85 miles, I told myself I could do it. Yeah, I ended up walking the hills (running was legit impossible with all the roots) and my time wasn't so great (about 40 minutes), but I did it. And while I was trying to do it, I legit didn't think I'd make it. So, I'm glad I did. Even though it was a poor life decision. Trail running is not for me. Nor is it for my knees. I honestly don't think I'll ever do that again.

Anyway, race photos...woooooo!
Pre-race with some med school friends
Because you can't see the shirts, they're a picture of Ryan Gosling and it says, "Hey Girl, I heard you like to get dirty." And on the back it says "Hurt the Dirt 2012." The race was called Hurt the Dirt...so you know.
Showing off the back of the shirts
Me near the end of the race (hence the bad form)
In other news, I am shocked - let me add some italics so you know how serious I am - I am shocked that I've done this well with my June Challenge. I have made it to the gym everyday and done some running everyday and I've avoided dessert and alcohol. I'm legit. Good for me. And my pace has definitely picked up. I started out this month running at 4.7 mph. Today I was going at 5.2mph. It was hard today because I'd been doing a consistent 5.0mph pace, but I am trying to challenge myself a little bit more.

Anyway, I've been terrrrible with taking pictures of my food - mostly because it's all in tupperware and I eat it at random intervals throughout my day. So, here's what was on my camera since my last post.
Obsessed with protein smoothies + 1 packet of crystal light
Nachos - these were about 600+ calories, but I hadn't eaten much that day
A day's worth of food (minus dinner)
Sunday's lunch
Anywho, I am off to hit the hay. I have to be at school at 8:50 a.m. tomorrow, so I'm going to try to get up early and hit the gym so I can literally spend all day at school. It will most likely be terrible, but such is life.

Struggle day

So I really, really didn't want to run a 5k today. And I think that mental block made itself known in my actual running. I couldn't do it. I ended up running only 2 miles and calling it quits. My body just wasn't up to it. I wasn't up to it and it just didn't happen. But that's okay. Kinda. I happen to be signed up for a 5k next Saturday. Sooo, I guess I'm going to be doing it sooner or later regardless...?

Anyway, I'm ramping up this week's workouts...ish. I'm going to try my hand at running 1.5 miles everyday rather than 1. I'm pretty sure I can make it. I'll just have to rethink my timing for when I take my shoes off. We shall see how it goes. I just don't want to die on Saturday. Or stop. Those are my two goals: no stopping or dying. The end.

I was a good girl with my studying today. But now I'm pooped and I have to be at school at 8 a.m. tomorrow, so I'm off to bed. Enjoy today's photos!

Pharmacology = the dementor of medical school

Nothing sucks the life force out of you faster than pharmacology lectures. Trust me, I would know. Between yesterday and today, I have watched about 4.5 hours of them. Not fun. And I have about two hours to go, but I stopped because I couldn't take it anymore. It was as though pharmacology was a dementor and giving me a big kiss - my soul was being sucked from me. And I know that 4.5 hours doesn't seem like much, but add in all the time I had to stop and rewind and take notes and force myself to focus - it was a lot. Okay. Fine. Maybe I didn't accomplish as much as I should have, but it's so boring. So, so boring. And what's worse is you couldn't double speed them. And I may have watched two Glee Project episodes. And one Game of Thrones episode. So, that was basically like watching lectures, right? Gah. Stop judging me!

Anyway, enough about school.

So, I didn't go to the total body sculpt class today as I had planned for two reasons: 1.) When my alarm went off, I was all, "Umm, it's the weekend so why am I getting up to an alarm? I'm still tired. I'm going back to bed," and 2.) My arms and chest were legit sore from my lifting yesterday. So, I'm glad I didn't try to overdo it. Well, mostly my biceps are glad. And my pectoralis muscles. But since we're all one big happy family, we're all glad I didn't overdo it. I did, however, head to the gym, run my mile (plus a little more - I've been running a teensy tiny bit over a mile since I started this June Challenge) and I chugged out 20 minutes on the elliptical. I was sweating like a mofo and decided to call it good for the day. Aaaaaand I already have a plan for tomorrow. And since I'm writing it out, I have to do it. Unlike the total body sculpt class. I wasn't committed to that... Okay, okay. I'm a hypocrite, but whatever. Tomorrow I'm going to run a 5k on the treadmill. I don't really know why. When I'm running my mile everyday, I always think to myself, "God. I am so glad it's only one mile." But I know I can do more. I mean, I've run a 10k without stopping so a 5k should be no problem. The operative word there being "should." Because in all reality, it will probably suck and I will regret it the moment I start doing it. But I'm going to do it because, well, I don't know why, but I am. Also, because I've told you I'm going to do it, I have to now.
My friend showed this to me the other day - very fitting for my life
Also, I took pictures of my food today. Well, some of the food. Not the four Snackwell's bars I ate in a row because I was procrastineating/craving chocolate/can't have real dessert. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Not the best decision, buuuuut I'm admitting it to all of you so I guess that means I'm working on it? I don't know - that's the worst binge I've had since I started the June Challenge, so that's good. However, I could have avoided it completely if I'd gone to school today like I should have. But I didn't want to, so yeah. That's that. Tomorrow: no binging. Okay. Good. Glad that's settled.

And here are the food pictures:
Pre-gym fuel
Post-gym lunch
Dessert because I forgot to take pictures of dinner - I was on the phone
Hard boiled eggs because I'm making devilled eggs to take to a friend's tomorrow
And tomorrow while I'm making the devilled eggs, I am promising myself that I will only eat one. You know, to test them. So yeah.

Friday night in a basement

Right now, I am chilling in my basement. Please see below basement photo:
I'm doing my laundry. On a Friday night. Because I'm lame. Also, because I would rather do laundry tonight than tomorrow when I should be spending time at school learning more drugs. Woo...

Anywho, I just wanted to do a brief update since this week was insane. Mostly because we had an intense pharmacology exam on Wednesday and a not-as-intense exam this morning. And next week, we have two pretty intense ones. So, you are forewarned: posting will not be regular. You know, like it pretty much always is.

Okay. To the actual point of this entry (because I always have a point when I blog...). This June Challenge is really helping me get my butt to the gym. I would say that more than half the days this week, I really, really didn't want to go to the gym. I told myself I didn't have enough time or that I should spend that time studying or whatever. But, because it's the June Challenge and I told myself I'd go every single day, I had to go every single day. Yeah. Betcha you couldn't have figured that out without me spelling it out for you. You're welcome.

I think my running form is getting better. My knees don't seem to hate me so much for running, but after yoga on Monday (with so many lunges), they were not a fan. It was one of those take-the-maximum-dose-of-ibuprofen-every-four-hours-on-the-hour nights so that I could fall asleep that night and the next day so the inflammation in my knees would go down. It's mostly the right one that's giving me issues. My left one is supposedly the one that is misaligned more, but the right one sucks the most. Go figure.

Anyway, yoga yesterday was so, so hard. The instructor was all, "Let's do planks all hour long!" I mean, not really. But that's how it felt. I was struggling majorly to do them and after the third or so rotation, I was lame and did them on my knees, which is a beginner's plank. But whatever. My core was all, "You are totally a beginner right now." So, that was that. At least I went.
Knee plank: Source
And I must say, it was a pretty good workout for my poor hamstrings, which were so, so tight it was ridiculous. I blame the lunges from Monday. I'm pretty sure they're unrelated, but I'm blaming them anyway.

My eating has been pretty legit, though I'm not going to lie - I haven't been logging everything. Nor have I been taking photos. Although the lack of photos is mostly because I misplaced my camera. Don't worry, I found it again. I'll take some pictures tomorrow.

And the no dessert/no alcohol thing wasn't as much of an issue this week as it was last week when I was PMSing like crazy and all I wanted to do was eat all the foods.

Well, that's pretty much all I've got. Tomorrow I'm hitting up a class at the Y called Total Body Sculpt with some friends. It targets all the major muscle groups which means that lifting today was probably not such a hot idea (you're not supposed to work the same muscle groups two days in a row because they need to rest), but my biceps are tiny and I want them to be bigger. So I guess I'll be hurting and it'll be my own fault. Per usual.

Alright - I'm going to watch some more lectures whilst my clothes dry. I've got one more load that needs to dry so tonight is going to be a pretty late night, buuuut at least it will have been somewhat productive.

Better ending to an anxious day

Would you look at all this blogging I'm doing? Before I know it, internet besties, I'm going to win some blogging award in addition to an award for being the best medical student. Ha. Right. I kid, I kid.

Today started out so, so stressful. How stressful? Stressful to the max. Think of the most stressed you've ever been. Multiply that by 10. Add a sense of impending doom and that's what I woke up to this morning. It's also what I fell asleep to last night...err, this morning...? Whatever. It was a rough start to the day. But, it's ending much better despite the fact that I'm still at school.

What made it end better, asks you/my internet bestie. Well, first of all, I got in a pretty legit work out. I did a little over a mile (as per the June Challenge rules) and I did it a tad faster than last week. Why? Because when I started running today it didn't seem fast enough. I know, I know: who am I!? Right after my run, I headed to yoga where we did a shit ton (a scientific unit that you may be familiar with) of lunges. We also did some forward bends, which are exactly like they sound. You bend forward and try to touch your toes. Well, internet bestie, I can finally touch the ground rather than struggling to reach my toes. What up, flexibility!? I mean, there were definitely still some poses I struggled with, but my planks are getting better and my hamstrings are getting ridiculously stretched. However, the pyramids today killed me - my hamstrings can't stretch that much after sitting on my ass all day.

Anywho, I'm off to memorize more drugs. I'm trying to decide when I'm going to hit the gym tomorrow. I think I may just do it first thing in the morning so I can spend all day at school: what fun!

Gah. Titles are so hard!

So, here I am. At school. Blogging. Just for you. Here's proof:
I'd smile if I were happy, but since I'm at school, it should be pretty obvious that happiness isn't going to happen.

Anywho, today was pretty successful. I didn't get out of bed until 10, hit up the gym right away for a mega sweat fest: a good run and some elliptical time. Then I got home, packed up some eats and headed to school. I've been here since about 1:30. How badly do I want to go home? Very badly. When will I go home? Probably around midnight. Booooooo.

And because I really need to get back to studying, here are some pics of today's eats since I brought my camera to school. You're welcome.

Underachieving

I don't have a lot to say except that today was my day to underachieve. I did literally no schoolwork. I spent literally forever making a dinner that turned out to be gross. And I went to the gym, ran a mile, and went home.

So, underachievers, let us unite in saying that we tried and maybe next time we'll do better.

Really, really don't want to go

Gah. You have no idea how badly I don't want to go to the gym right now. But it's Day 1 of the June Challenge, so I must go to the gym and I must run a mile. So, off I go. To do two things that sound super not fun. I'd blame the weather, but I'm pretty sure that even if it weren't raining, I still wouldn't want to go. Boo. And not being able to eat dessert? Makes me really wish I didn't bake so many yesterday. The good news is that I'm getting rid of all prohibited items from my apt tonight at a girls night. So, phew.

Okay. Okay. I'll stop stalling and get my butt to the gym. You're so judgmental. Gosh.

Another day, another challenge

This is about my 5th time starting this entry. I can't seem to get it right. Every time I write something, it just doesn't sound right. I don't know what to say. I've been doing okay getting exercise and eating better, but I'm still not where I want to be. I'm not sure why this was so much easier last year. Perhaps because it was the biggest thing going on in my life at the time, but I'm struggling like whoa. Well, more like WHOA.

I think I just haven't gotten into a schedule that I like. Working out in the mornings is hard because I like to get to school early to grab a good room. Working out in the evenings is hard because I struggle to get back to studying. Working out in the afternoon is hard because then I have to leave school and come back and that's a pain in the butt. But, I think it's something I want to explore. I think having a break in the middle of the day would be nice and then I could have either lunch or dinner at home and then head back to school to study. It would also decrease the amount of food prep I'd have to do in the evenings and I'm a major fan of any plan that means I have to pack fewer meals.

Also, June is coming up! June was my most successful weight loss month last year. I'm pretty sure it's because I realized that I was majorly pudgy from the winter and finally decided to do something about it. So, I'm going to do something about it this year, too. I'm going to set three goals. They are going to be so, so hard. Like seriously so, so hard. I don't think you understand how hard they are going to be.

  • Go to the gym everyday, and, as part of my workout, run a mile. Every. Single. Day. And on the days where the gym seriously isn't possible (I can't think of a reason why that would be), I will lace up those running shoes, don my Garmin Forerunner and run a mile that way.
I know, I know. You're thinking to yourself, "Self. Danika ran a 10k like three weeks ago. One mile everyday? Psh. No big deal." But it is a big deal. Why? Because a.) I really, really need to work on my form, b.) I really, really hate running, and c.) I really, really need to work on my speed - it's pathetic right now.

Okay. Goal 2:
  • Log all my foods all the time. And take pictures of all food.
I know, I know. This doesn't seem that hard either. But it is such a big pain in the butt. And when I go to a friend's apartment and they have an amazing spread, I usually just go bat shit crazy and shovel food into my mouth. And I think to myself, well, this food doesn't count because I don't have the nutritional info so I simply can't record it. Riiiiight. Food that doesn't count. And medical school is easy. Also, I want pictures because then you will want to read my blog more.

Goal 3, which may be the hardest one.
  • No dessert or alcohol can be consumed.
Dessert is my kryptonite. It doesn't matter what it is, I will eat at least 2 servings. And I probably should be eating -2 servings. Sooo, I'm just going to cut it out completely. Again. I'm also going to cut out alcohol. For some weird reason, I've been drinking a lot this month and I'm only too aware that alcohol is just a bunch of empty calories. So, in an effort to cut out things that are calorie-dense and nutritionally-poor, I am giving up da booze. So much sadness.

Anywho, I shall try my darnedest to update everyday. Even if it is two sentences to tell you how very badly I wanted to eat dessert that day. Or how ridiculously hard my one mile was that day. Or how awesome I am. Or how cute my cat is. Or how much I wish I hadn't done this June Challenge, which I shall recap for you here:

June Challenge
  1. Run a mile and go to the gym every single day
  2. Log all food consumed
  3. No dessert or alcohol
Gah. Writing it like that makes it look even worse than it is. Here goes nothing!

A few thoughts and unveiling my July challenge

Well, I made it! I stepped on the scale this morning and it said 216.6. What up, 40.4 pounds lost!? That feels good! Now I just need to keep it off. So, while we're on the subject of maintaining weight loss, I want to tell you a bit about my journey so far (loved that transition, didn't you?).

When I first decided that I need to lose weight in June of 2005, I started going to Curves to work out. I had a week trial and after that week, I decided to sign up. During the sign-up process, you have to weigh in and have measurements taken so you have a baseline on which you can improve. This was the day that my highest recorded weight was taken: 268 pounds. After about a year of consistently working out and making slightly better nutrition choices, I lost 60 pounds. That's right. I was down to 208 pounds! It was awesome. But, I didn't keep it off. I started getting busier at school, binging when I ate, eating inconsistently, and before I knew it, I had gained back nearly all the weight I lost. Thus, in October of 2010, I wasn't surprised when I weighed in at a whopping 257 pounds. That's when I decided I needed to do it all over again, but in a fashion that was actually liveable and didn't feel like a restriction. In short, I couldn't diet; I needed to change. So that's what this year off has been for me.

I've learned to be smarter with deciding what goes into my cart at the grocery store. I've learned how to cook for myself (still kinda shaky on that). I've learned portion control (though I'm still learning consistency on that). I've also learned a lot from Mark, my personal trainer. I've learned new exercises that I can do that won't be too rough on my knees. I've learned how to use the machines at the gym (and not be afraid of the plate-loaded ones). I've learned how use a heart rate monitor. But mostly importantly, I've learned that talking about it helps. I have amazing friends and family who are all more than willing to support me through this journey, but they can't support me if they don't know that I need help. So, I need to call on you guys (again) for some help.

I'm really worried that when I go to med school, I'm going to gain it all back again. I'm also worried that I'm going to start eating crap (not literally), and that I'm going to find excuses to stop exercising. And this scares me because I've been there before. I've gained it all back. And I know how down it makes you feel. I just can't do it again. The other thing that worries me is that I see exercise and eating right as the means to an end, rather than a lifestyle. I still don't enjoy it every time I go. Like when someone asks me if I'd rather sit on my ass and watch TV or go to the gym, I'd probably choose to sit on my ass.

So, that's why I'm doing challenges. Once I make things competitive, I tend to get into it a little more. So, my June challenge was a big success! Though I didn't do a great job tracking calories (it can be a tad tedious), I did lose a whopping 14 pounds in a month. So that's something to celebrate!

And now, for the unveiling of the July challenge! Get excited!

  1. I am giving up dessert, again. However, I do have a few exceptions to this rule this month. I am going to have a piece of cake this weekend - just one (and a normal portion-sized one). I am also going to have a piece of the fruit pizza that I'm making for next weekend when I spend a weekend with Matt and his family in GR. And lastly, I'm going to have a piece of wedding cake when I go to a wedding with Lisa in Detroit.
  2. I am going to do heart rate cycling every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning before work (starting tomorrow!!!). This is going to suck. But I am going to do it. This is where I'm really going to need your help. I'm going to need you to bug me, to tell me that my excuses suck (when I try to make them), and that I'm awesome for going (and for any other applicable reasons).
  3. No eating out. This will not only help save me money, but it will force me to make better choices with my food. Though I'm sure there will be occasions when this can't be helped (the wedding weekend, for instance), I'm going to try my best to plan ahead to minimize them.
  4. Continue drinking at least 4 water bottles a day
All right, now that that's over, here are some pictures of what I ate today:
Breakfast

Morning snack
Lunch
Afternoon snack
Dinner
Salmon
Garlic-herb potatoes
Garlic zucchini
I also went to the gym and trained with Mark today since we didn't meet yesterday. We discussed some of my goals and I'm gearing up for an intense July with him. I also went blading tonight. I didn't go nearly as long as yesterday because I really had to pee at about 2.5 miles out, so I turned around and came back. It's pretty hard to hold it when you're blading, in case you were wondering. I also didn't mind turning back because my right knee is giving me some pretty awesome pain as of late and my left knee kept popping. So, I really wanted to rest them up before heart rate cycling tomorrow morning.

Anywho, I'm off to bed so I can be well-rested before tomorrow. Any fun plans for the fourth in your future?

The [Almost] Forty Pound Post

That's right. I made it! Kinda...

Here's last week:
And here's this week:
So, it's a 1.2 pound loss. And, I'm down 39.6 pounds, which rounds to 40 pounds! Yeah, cheap, I know. I'll be there by next week, I promise.

And because I didn't post yesterday, here are the pictures of what I ate:

Today, I didn't get my butt out of bed early to go to the gym despite the fact that I went to bed at about 8:30 last night. Pathetic, I know. But the real reason I didn't get up is because my right knee was aching and I didn't want to irritate it further. Yup, that's a bit more legit sounding, isn't it?

Anywho, I got up at 7:00 a.m. (that's almost 11 hours of sleep!) and had a lovely breakfast.
Then I headed to work and was only a tiny bit late. Today was the day that Lubrizol's president James Hambrick was coming to visit CPI. Thus, everyone was super dressed up and ridiculously on task (or at least pretended to be). To be honest (and perhaps I'm too cynical to be in this kind of business...which is why I'm leaving for med school!!!), but I doubt James cared what people looked like. For example, Carrie wore a nice top, black pants, and black slipper/ballet shoes. Uh, did you forget that you work in a lab? With oil? Where you are most likely going to get dirty? Really? I, on the other hand, wore my typical jeans and t-shirt. And then before James came to do the lab rotation, Carrie came and asked me if I wanted to put my lab coat on because she'd get it for me. Um, no. I never wear my lab coat. It's heavy and big and I don't like it. And I'm not going to wear a lab coat to impress some man who's not even going to remember me... I swear. He's just another person. He doesn't even sign our paychecks! And he probably was bored out of his mind with people going out of their way for him/being incredibly fake around him. And to top things off, Mike came in the office and yelled at me because I didn't look busy (I guess I should tell you that I was reclined in my chair talking to Dillon). Uh, is there something I can do? No. Just figure out how to look like you're working. Riiiight. Or, you could give me work so I don't have to pretend...just a thought. And Dillon's supervisor told him the same thing. So, we cowered in the lab together trying to entertain each other.

Lunch was a tad more entertaining. I paid some bills and decided I should also pay my rent online for my East Lansing apartment. However, after seeing the $54 "convenience fee," I decided that snail mail was the way to go. Seriously? How can you justify a $54 convenience fee? I'd call that an inconvenience fee. Ridiculous. Anywho, my lunch was not ridiculous. Here it is:
After lunch, I got to sit around "looking busy" again and decided to do some med school financial stuff while I wasted away my time. I'm happy to report that everything is covered with federal loans and I don't need to research private loans anymore. Thank goodness. That's a relief! I also spent some time looking up recipes involving asparagus since I bought a bundle of it on Saturday even though I don't really like it... So, that being said, I went home immediately after work and made dinner.

I cooked some chicken that I marinated a long time ago, made some sweet potato fries, and made garlic sauteed asparagus. But, because my timing was a tad off, the fries and asparagus were done well before the chicken. And by the time I finished gobbling those up, I didn't want the chicken.
Please note how few of the fries were burnt. Win! And another win was that I video chatted with Lisa during dinner via my phone's wireless network. I wanted to try out video chatting using my phone rather than the internet I pay for because I don't plan on paying for internet while in med school and it worked! Woot. Wiiiiiiiiiin.

After dinner, I decided to go blading instead of going to the gym to keep things a bit more low-impact. And I bladed 11 miles. What up!? I decided that I was probably going to blade about 9 miles because I wasn't going to go to the gym in addition to blading, but then I hit my stride and was really enjoying myself and decided to keep on going. The furthest I've bladed before was 7 miles, so 11 miles is quite an accomplishment for me. I don't think I've ever had such fun blading before, so I'm really glad I went out tonight. And while I was out there, I met a couple who were also blading. The husband was trying to teach the wife. He told me she was doing awesome so far. They looked like they were in their mid-40s, so props to her for going out and learning to blade. I know it's hard so I definitely felt for her. Anywho, after my 11 mile journey, I headed to 7/11 to get a small slurpee to cool off.

Now I'm updating you to tell you all about my day. Exciting, I know. But not nearly as exciting as tomorrow's entry will be! I'll be wrapping up my June Challenge, relaying some thoughts, and getting pumped up for my July Challenge!

How'd your June challenges go?
