Well, day one of the challenge was a success! I woke up nice and early at 7:30ish and fiddled around on my computer until the gym opened at 8. I distracted myself enough to not get to the gym until 8:30ish. Anywho, I did a good hour of strength training since the gym was pretty empty that early on a Sunday morning. The busiest times are definitely after work hours. Sometimes all the treadmills are taken during those times. It's crazy! And I'm not really one to wait for machines or try to sneak in to get machines, so I prefer the gym when it's a little emptier. So, this morning was lovely.
After my strength training, I came home, showered up and then Skyped with Nasur. For those of you who are new to the blog (welcome!), Nasur is my Ugandan boyfriend whose fiancé visa was recently granted. He'll arrive at the end of December and we'll have 90 days from that point onward to get married. That's a bit terrifying. I've never been super excited about the thought of marriage, so I guess that'll be...fun? I am pretty excited about growing old with Nasur though, so that's something.
After Skype, I headed out to get some Christmas shopping done and finish up getting things for my Secret Santa. All the residents are doing an exchange and were supposed to spend about $25 on our gifts. The rest of the afternoon, I caught up on some charting that I probably should have done earlier...
I also finally cleaned off my dresser. It's the first time that's happened since I moved here back in June. It had to happen eventually!
Anywho, I'm going to head to bed! 27 days until Nasur's here! And 6 more days of my one-week challenge!

Sunday Funday
Having a random night shift in the middle of weeks of day shifts is a bit hard to adjust to. However, it still allows you to have somewhat of a weekend, which was kind of nice.
When I went in to work, there weren't any laboring patients, so I had it pretty easy. I saw quite a few patients in triage and sent most of them home. Despite the fact that it wasn't very busy, the time really flew by and I had some great med students helping me out. When I got home, I fell asleep almost instantly and woke up with no low back pain or hip pain. I was pumped. Yesterday was the first time I'd woken up without back pain and I was a little worried it would be a one time deal. But, nope. So, that seals it - I'm definitely heading back to the chiropractor this week.
After waking up, I hurriedly put some things together to head to my friend Monica's place. She was having some people over to hang out and go swim in the lake she lives on. It was just what I needed - hanging out with some non-medical people, eating some not so healthy food (read: pizza and brownies) and spending time in the sun relaxing.
Now I'm home and cleaning up a bit so that I can start my last week of OB off on the right foot. Tomorrow will also be a fasting day, so I'm taking a look at what my meals will be now so that I don't go too far astray from my goals. Tomorrow is also my hardest day of the week because I run the board and triage all afternoon by myself, meaning I'm responsible for all of the patients in labor. It's a lot of responsibility and I'm still pretty darn slow. But I'm usually too busy to think about being hungry.
Tomorrow the other interns and I are planning on doing some anatomy review and so I'll either hit the gym late or not at all. We'll see how I'm feeling. Anywho, I didn't take any photos today - sorry about that!
What's your favorite summer activity? I definitely love to be outdoors swimming in a pool or on the beach!

Travel Day + The Day's Eats
So today I had to wake up nice and early to get to the airport on time. I have a friend watching Bailey for me, so I also had to change my sheets and tidy up last minute so that my apartment was liveable by other people's standards. I did the bulk of tidying yesterday, but there were a few things that needed to be swept over. I also made sure I had enough time to eat a good breakfast. Traveling on an empty stomach makes me even more irritable than traveling in general.
I flew to Chicago first and was starving by the time I got there. To be fair, it had been about 3.5 hours since I'd eaten last. So, I got a bagel. I was tracking my calories like I said I would and estimated the bagel, but then realized I had a nutrition look-up app. Let's just say the bagel I bought was totally not worth it. It may have been if they'd toasted it as I had requested, but it definitely wasn't pre-toasted. But I ate it because I was starving.
While waiting for my flight, I charged all the things and then walked around for a good 20-30 minutes. Because I had the time, I walked to a different terminal to find my bagel and then had to walk back and then walked up and down the C terminal.
On my flight, I ate a South Beach diet bar for a quick snack and slept most of the way to Atlanta. In an aisle seat. Without a neck pillow. Let me just say this (for those of you who can't infer): ouch. I need to invest in a neck pillow. In the airport they're like $20. And I kinda want an inflatable one so I can pack it and not have to worry about it again later. Perhaps when I'm back in Michigan, I could take a look for one. I remember spotting on at TJ Maxx.
Once I got to Atlanta, I rented a car and drove to Macon, where my interview is. It's about an hour and 20 minutes from Atlanta, which wasn't that bad as it was essentially hopping on the expressway and going south. But I got really hungry again, so I stopped for Subway even though a drive thru would have been more convenient (and also more calories). My sandwich was probably under 400 calories (given what my estimator says).
I arrived safely at my hotel, responded to some emails, read about the program, looked up some stuff for future travels and then headed to the dinner, which was Mexican. I overloaded on the chips, but got a taco salad for dinner, which I ate maybe half of. I didn't try to estimate it because the day is done and I had about 900 calories left for my limit. I'm guessing I went over because there was queso, but I'll get back on it again tomorrow!
Our interview isn't until 10:30, so I'm thinking I'll either sleep in and be super rested or wake up and hit the fitness center. I also don't have anything to do in the afternoon tomorrow, so the fitness center could possibly be done then. I'm thinking that's what I'll do because all this traveling makes me pooped.
That's all, folks! See you back here tomorrow (most likely).

Chock full o' photos for you!
You guys. I'm sorry that I didn't do a legit post Friday nor did I do one at all yesterday. Let me explain, show you pictures (as an apology because I know you're just here for the food porn) and explain what life has in store for me this week.
So, Friday was exhaustion day. We had the all-day learning thing in East Lansing. Some of it: very helpful. A minority of it: waste of time. But it was the getting up at 5:30 a.m. that was a bit rough for me. It's not that I'm not a morning person, it's that I have a hard time getting out of bed. Once I'm awake, I feel ready to begin the day. But getting awake is...more painful than having a bone sawed in half without anesthesia difficult. Anywho, I was dragging Friday. I still went to Zumba Friday night because it's a standing date I have with some friends and then I vegged and watched a movie.
Saturday, I had to head to the hospital to work. Wasn't thrilled with this, but it is what it is. I got out earlier, around 11:30, but we're only supposed to work until noonish. Then I came home, cleaned up a bit from Friday since I didn't really feel like doing anything Friday and then headed to Kalamazoo to see my sister's new place post-move, help her hang some pictures, and head out to look for bar stools. We were supposed to go shopping for shoes for me, but my feet are w i d e and it's damn near impossible to find shoes that fit me without make me wish I had extreme nerve damage in them so I wouldn't be able to feel them. That was a bust. But she does have in-unit laundry so I did get to do two loads of laundry. We went to dinner and then I finally headed home around 10, meaning I was less than thrilled to wake up and go to the hospital today.
This morning, I realized I didn't have my badge to get into the hospital, meaning that I couldn't get into the parking lot or the office. I parked in the not-for-employees area that isn't badge-access only and then someone let me into the office where my ID was sitting and waiting for me. At least I didn't lose it...phew.
This afternoon, I did some deeper cleaning, made some lunch, put away the laundry, wasted time on the interwebs, and then hit up the grocery store. I finally bought some watermelon and cantaloupe. These two fruits alone are one of the reasons I love summer so much. They are awful when they're not in season, but they are the best right now. And they were cheap...ish. Baller.
I also cooked a legit dinner: roasted garlic macaroni and cheese using this recipe. It was a lot of work for someone who doesn't care to cook, like me. But I figured: I love garlic. I love cheese. Noodles? Eh, they're okay. Why not? Well, I am not so pleased to say that I didn't much care for it. This may be my fault as I skipped the mustard, salt, and pepper. I skipped them because I don't like the taste of mustard much, because you don't really need to add more salt to pasta and pepper is just okay. Anywho, I decided to toss it. I know, I know. What a waste. But why eat something that is likely pretty high in calories and not like it when you could actually like something you eat? Exactly. Tossing it was the right answer. Plus, it'd take up massive amount of fridge space because it made a lot.
So, here are some photos for you before we move on to this week's plan.
You may have noticed that there is no weigh-in from Friday. This is because I didn't put my camera in the bathroom the night before, so I forgot until I was mid-shower and, as a rule, I always weigh myself after my first pee before doing anything else. Plus, when I was done breakfasting and was still in my bathrobe, I opted to get on and it said 238 so I decided I didn't want to get all depressed over a number and just skip a week. Plus, I'd like to change my weigh-in date to Mondays to keep myself motivated to stay on track over the weekend. Thus, my next weigh in will be on Memorial day. Stay tuned, folks.
Other plans for this week: I start nights tomorrow. I don't make that switch very gracefully, so I'll probably bitch and moan about it. This means that I will likely go to the gym in the mornings when no one's around or go to zumba at 6 on Monday and Wednesday because I don't have to be at work until 8pm. We'll see. I'll keep you posted. Either way, I need to get moving. Also planned for this week is getting my shit together. This is the beginning of week 3 of this rotation and I haven't done very much studying. Get ready for lots of "I'm studying" photos.
Cheers, folks!
